Wander and get lost in the bustling Cai Rang floating market

Travel by boat and bicycle to explore Ben Tre and Tra Vinh areas of Vietnam. Get a true local experience with a homestay with a local family and learn about their cuisine and everyday way of life. Visit different family-run businesses like tropical fruit orchards, coconut broom making and many more.

Road transfer from Ho Chi Minh City Centre to Ben Tre: 2 hours

Set off around 08:00am for a two-hour drive to Ben Tre. Situated in the Delta of Mekong River, Ben Tre is famous for its tropical fruit gardens and traditional handicrafts made from coconuts. On arrival in Ben Tre, board a local boat for a first glimpse of life on the Mekong Delta, exploring its maze of waterways.

Cross Cai Cam River and start the journey with a visit to a coconut processing workshop to learn about the multiple uses of coconut. Then hop on a vintage Lambro (a loud yet funky van), and drive through sleepy village roads and stop by family-run coconut broom and mat making workshops.

Stroll to Uncle Nhu’s house to visit his fruit orchard and learn about local agriculture and the lives of the older generation in the Mekong Delta. Take some time to sample some of the fresh fruits of the tropics. Say goodbye to Uncle Nhu and take a sampan ride through idyllic labyrinth of canals, before getting back to the boat for a cruise to Mrs. Mai’s house for lunch.

Spend the afternoon at leisure. Relax, or choose from a number interesting optional activities such as; a rowing boat ride, catching shrimps in the creek, making Grasshopper’s from coconut leaves, or simply making friends with the local neighbour.

Mid-afternoon, take a two-hour transfer to Tra Vinh and receive a warm welcome by a host family, a local Khmer family of three generations.

Take some time to refresh before helping the family to prepare dinner. Learn all about the local way of cooking, chat and get to know the family and enjoy dinner together!

Overnight in Tra Vinh

Wake up to the serene sound of the countryside. After breakfast start the morning cycle ride around the town, discovering the way of life of the local Khmer people who have settled here.

Although Khmer make up the highest percentage of the population of Tra vinh, there is still a number of Vietnamese and Chinese people living in the area, which can be seen by the different style of temples in the area. Visit the Chinese, Khmer and Vietnamese temples and learn how the different cultures practise Buddhism.

Visit the 700-year old Khmer pagoda where the Khmer community practice the religion, and come to learn to speak Khmer. En route pass by a Chinese Pagoda with a different kind of architecture and decoration.

Cycle along the rice fields and witness the farmers working, before arriving at Huynh Ky ancient house combining colonial and Vietnamese architecture. The house was built in 1924 by Mr. Huynh Ky, who used to be the Head of Tra Vinh Province under the French colonial period.

On the way back, cycle past local villages and observe their daily life. Stop by at a local wet market. Be amazed by the huge array of fresh produce on offer and snap some photos of the place.

Head back to the homestay and rest before lunch. After lunch it is time to say goodbye to the family and travel to Can Tho.

Overnight in Can Tho

Start the day with a visit to Cai Rang Floating Market. While crossing the Mekong, observe the traditional sights such as rice barges, wooden ship building yards and even fruit drying along the Mekong's banks. After paying a visit to the colourful floating market check-out and disembark before the return to Ho Chi Minh City.
